Breaking an ongoing commitment for a recognized reason

A twelve-month subscription is not a prison sentence. Certain life events allow for early termination without paying the remaining months, provided they are seriously documented. The rest depends on the quality of the file, not on the goodwill of the service.

The most commonly accepted reasons

• moving to an area where the service is no longer available;
• job loss or involuntary termination of contract;
• long-term hospitalization or lasting health problem;
• over-indebtedness recognized by the commission;
• death, for relatives managing the estate.

Justification determines the decision

Each reason must be proven: employer's certificate, proof of address, medical certificate, decision of the over-indebtedness commission. The document should be attached to the request, in the subscription area or by mail. Without supporting documents, the reason has no value to the service, regardless of its validity. A recent and legible document avoids back-and-forth exchanges that delay the process.

The specific case of moving

Moving is only a valid reason if the service does not exist at the new address, not if it is simply less convenient for you. An internet box that cannot be served counts, a gym you leave for mere comfort does not. In such cases, attach proof of address and, if necessary, proof of unavailability of the service at the new location.

Drafting the request

An effective request is just a few lines long: your identity, contract reference, stated reason, desired end date, and attached document. There's no need to recount your situation in detail; the justification speaks for itself. A dated written request is always better than a phone call, of which no exploitable trace remains.

The notice period also applies

A legitimate reason exempts you from penalties, but not always from the notice period. Depending on the contract, termination takes effect upon receipt of supporting documents or after a short delay. Anticipate this timeframe to avoid paying for an extra month unnecessarily, especially if your direct debit due date is approaching.
